GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – The FBI in Milwaukee is warning parents about an increase in online groups targeting kids across the country, including in Wisconsin.
In an open letter to parents, the FBI says these networks are commonly known as “764.”
The FBI says the group uses tactics called “sadistic online exploitation.” The predators seek out kids through messaging apps, social media and gaming platforms.
They befriend the victim and try to groom them through a trusting or romantic relationship.
The goal is to manipulate and threaten the child into sharing sexual abuse material, or perform acts of animal cruelty, self-harm or violence.
Warning signs to watch for
Some warning signs to watch out for in your kids include sudden behavior changes or changes in appearance.
Other signs include fresh cuts, scratches, bruises or other wounds unexplained harm to younger siblings.
Also watch for scars that are in patterns, including names or signs from online platforms.
How to protect your children
To help protect your kids, the FBI says you should make sure to monitor your child’s online activities.
Talk to your children about the risks of sharing personal information, pictures or videos on the internet.
Use discretion when posting photos or information about your kids online and be careful about who you’re accepting friend requests from.
