The fire service is backing Child Safety Week, promoting practical steps families can take to protect children from harm at home, outdoors and near water.
With warmer weather approaching and children spending more time outside, NFRS is emphasising the need for supervision and hazard awareness.
Joe Hunter, group manager for community risk and response at Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Child Safety Week is a great opportunity for families to talk about risks and how to stay safe.
“If a child finds themselves in difficulty in the water, remembering to ‘Float to Live’ could save their life – tilt your head back, keep your ears submerged, relax and control your breathing until you can call for help or reach safety.
“We encourage parents and carers to talk to children about this simple technique and always supervise them around water.”
Throughout the week, NFRS crews will deliver safety advice to schools, community groups and families.
Key messages include fitting and testing smoke alarms on every floor, keeping matches and lighters out of reach, and never leaving cooking unattended.
