The South African Police Service has seized 100 firearms and ammunition from a private security company in Soweto, Johannesburg.
National spokesperson, Lieutenant-Colonel Amanda van Wyk, says a targeted compliance inspection was conducted under the national anti-crime initiative, Operation Buyisa, yesterday.
According to preliminary police reports, the security firm was operating in direct violation of the Firearms Control Act.
Van Wyk says the company’s Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) accreditation was recently suspended.
Following the suspension, the responsible owner failed to legally dispose of the company’s arsenal as required by law.
Inspectors found that the company’s firearm storage facility failed to meet the strict security and safety standards stipulated in the Act.
“Because the weapons were not properly accounted for, SAPS will subject all 100 seized firearms to ballistic testing. Forensic experts will determine if any of the weapons have been linked to recent shooting incidents or other violent crimes”, Van Wyk said.
