PHNOM PENH – Cybercrime police have arrested 2,418 people in 18 operations in the first six months of this year.

They were Cambodian, Chinese, Thai, Burmese, Vietnamese, Laotian, Indian, Palestinian, Indonesian, and Malaysian, the Interior Ministry said on July 17.

Cases involving 73 suspects have been filed with the court, while the rest have been deported.

Police opened investigations on 66 money laundering and terrorism financing cases. Of these, over 60 cases were submitted to the capital-provincial municipal courts with requests to charge 96 suspects with money laundering in 31 cases.

Of the accused there were 27 Cambodians, 17 Chinese, seven Thai, two Burmese, 37 Vietnamese, two Laotians, two Indians, one Palestinian and one Malaysian. They were reportedly also involved in drug trafficking.

At a meeting on the six-month work summary on July 17, National Police Chief Sar Thet ordered capital-provincial police to continue operations to shut down online-gaming websites across the country.

“The police must put more efforts to the operations, inspection, research and raiding on all types of online scamming by the cybercriminals,” Thet said.

Cybercrimes is one of the police priorities and Cambodia has been cooperating with neighboring and regional countries to fight cross-border crimes.

On June 27, Prime Minister Hun Manet, who chairs the high-level inter-ministerial committee for combatting online scams, also led a meeting to set out further measures against online scams.

As a result, 20 online-scam locations were raided from June 27 to July 16 in Phnom Penh and in Kandal, Preah Sihanouk, Kampong Speu, Banteay Meanchey, Kratie and Pursat provinces.

The operations arrested 1,362 suspects, most of whom were Vietnamese, the Information Ministry said.

Since Hun Manet issued a July 15 order for tough measures to wipe out cybercrimes, ten more online-scam locations have been discovered and shutdown in Phnom Penh and in Kampong Speu, Preah Sihanouk, Pursat, Kratie and Banteay Meanchey provinces.

Nearly 1,000 suspects — from Vietnam, China, Taiwan and Myanmar — were arrested in the operations in the past few days.
