Families visiting Brighton beach this summer can now pick up free child safety wristbands, thanks to a new initiative led by Brighton RNLI’s water safety team in partnership with Sussex Police cadets.
The scheme aims to make it easier to reunite lost children with their parents or guardians by allowing a mobile number to be written on the wristband. In the event a child becomes separated in the busy beach environment, lifeguards or police can quickly contact the adult responsible.
The wristbands are being distributed by RNLI lifeguards, Brighton Pier staff, and selected local shops and vendors. They’re supplied by HM Coastguard as part of a wider effort to prevent panic and streamline responses when children go missing at the seaside.
Each year, lifeguards and police deal with reports of missing children on the beach, particularly during peak holiday periods.
Vicki Linton-Crook, Brighton RNLI’s water safety advisor, urged families to take extra care near the water and reminded beachgoers to stay hydrated, apply sunscreen, and keep inflatables secure to avoid accidents.
Parents are also encouraged to take a photo of their children in the morning to provide an up-to-date reference if needed.
The wristbands are part of ongoing efforts to improve safety and ensure families enjoy their time at the coast with peace of mind.
