A free fraud prevention summit in Guntersville aims to combat rising scams against older Americans, with FBI data revealing a 60% increase in losses in 2025.
GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. — A free fraud prevention summit is coming to Guntersville next month as new FBI data shows older Americans lost more money to scams than any other age group in 2025.
TARCOG and the Marshall County Council on Aging will host the Fraud & Scam Summit on Tuesday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the RSVP building, 19272 U.S. 431 in Guntersville.
The event will cover common scams targeting older adults, including tech support scams, government impersonation scams, grandparent scams, cybersecurity threats and consumer fraud. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions during a panel discussion following lunch.
According to the FBI’s 2025 Internet Crime Complaint Center Annual Report, Americans 60 and older reported $7.7 billion in fraud losses last year, an increase of about 60% from 2024. People in their 30s and 40s reported $4.6 billion in losses.
Across all age groups, the FBI received more than 1 million internet crime complaints in 2025, with reported losses totaling $20.9 billion, up 26% from the previous year.
The summit is organized by TARCOG’s Senior Medicare Patrol program, which works to educate Medicare beneficiaries, caregivers and families about preventing, detecting and reporting health care fraud, errors and abuse.
