The provincial government announced April 9 that it will invest $22 million to strengthen school safety through building upgrades and enhanced training support for school staff.

“In response to the tragedy in Tumbler Ridge, we are taking decisive action to strengthen school security and ensure staff are better prepared to respond in critical moments,” said Demetrios Nicolaides, Minister of Education and Childcare.

At Foothills School Division, board chair Theresa Letendre and superintendent of schools Chris Fuzessy released a joint statement on the announcement.

“We appreciate the Government of Alberta’s recognition that school safety is a shared responsibility and the continued collaboration required to support safe, caring, and welcoming learning environments,” said Letendre and Fuzessy.

The two said the targeted, one-time funding will enhance safety measures and strengthen systems already in place to safeguard learning environments.

“As recently highlighted in Footnotes (April 2026), fostering safe and respectful learning spaces is foundational to student well-being, belonging, and a flourishing school community,” said Letendre and Fuzessy.  “We look forward to applying these resources thoughtfully to support our schools and the students and families we serve.”

About the funding

Funding for safety training will be available through a one-time grant of $1.75 million that will be distributed to public school boards based on student enrolment.

$200,000 will be provided to the Association of Independent Schools and Colleges in Alberta to deliver training for eligible school leaders.

Based on student enrolment, $20 million will be distributed to eligible school boards for building security upgrades. The funding will support improvements such as locks, doors, security cameras, window coverings, and related measures.

School authorities will be required to report on how funds are used, with an interim report due in November 2026 and a final report in November 2027.
