Parents in the German city of Bochum are calling for urgent security measures after disturbing incidents involving residents from a municipal shelter located directly beside a daycare centre.
The shelter, originally set up for asylum seekers, has since 2019 also housed homeless individuals struggling with drug addiction or mental illness. According to local media, one woman recently climbed over the low fence separating the properties and ran onto the daycare playground. Staff intervened and escorted her out, but parents say similar incidents have gone ignored by local authorities.
Children have reportedly developed severe anxiety, with some refusing to attend daycare and experiencing nightmares. One parent said their child talked about “naked men” and woke in the night crying. Staff have also faced verbal abuse, and men from the shelter have allegedly approached children outside the premises.
The fence has no privacy screen, and local patrols have been sporadic. The daycare is operated by a charity, which is now calling for stronger safeguards. Parents are demanding a climb-proof barrier and want the homeless residents moved elsewhere.
Centre-right parties in the Bochum city council, including the CDU and FDP, have submitted a formal motion to restrict the shelter once again to refugee families only.
