To strengthen these efforts, George disclosed that the ministry was working towards establishing a permanent regional headquarters for cybersecurity and data protection operations.
Ghana’s Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations , Samuel Nartey George, has begun a two-day working tour of the Volta Region to assess telecommunications infrastructure, inspect digital skills training centres and strengthen efforts to combat cybercrime.
The tour commenced on Thursday, October 15, 2026, with a courtesy visit to Volta Regional Minister James Gunu. It forms part of a nationwide monitoring exercise following similar visits to the Greater Accra, Eastern and Ashanti regions.
The minister’s itinerary includes Community Information Centres (CICs) hosting activities under the One Million Coders Programme (OMCP), as well as sites under the Rural Telephony Project (RTP). On the first day, the delegation inspected the OMCP centre at the Ho Community Information Centre in Ho Central and a new rural telephony site at Akoefe Gadza. The team also visited the Silverstone Youth ICT Lab OMCP centre in Agortime Ziope and an existing RTP site at Akoete.
The tour is scheduled to continue on Friday, October 16, with an engagement at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS). The delegation is also expected to visit an existing rural telephony site at Adaklu-Blidokope, the Adaklu-Waya OMCP centre and two new RTP sites at Adaklu-Dawanu and Adaklu-Kpetsu.
Addressing connectivity challenges in the region, George said the ministry was working with the National Communications Authority (NCA) and telecommunications operators to improve network services and resolve persistent coverage gaps.
A key concern is network spillover in border communities, where signals from Togolese telecommunications networks can lead residents in Ghana to connect to foreign networks and incur high international roaming charges. The ministry is assessing affected areas to identify measures that could improve local network coverage.
The minister also commended the Volta Regional Minister and the Volta Regional Coordinating Council for working with the Cyber Security Authority to address mobile money fraud and other forms of digital crime.
He highlighted a joint intelligence operation that disrupted an impersonation syndicate operating across Accra and the Volta Region, citing it as an example of the importance of coordination between regional authorities and cybersecurity agencies.
To strengthen these efforts, George disclosed that the ministry was working towards establishing a permanent regional headquarters for cybersecurity and data protection operations.
The tour combines infrastructure monitoring with digital skills development and cybersecurity efforts, as the ministry continues its regional engagements to assess connectivity needs and improve access to digital services across Ghana.
