Ghana lost GH¢209.7 million to reported cybercrime between January and September 2026, almost 10 times the GH¢22.5 million recorded for the whole of 2025.

The figures were discussed on GTV’s Breakfast Show on Thursday during the Tech Conversation segment, where cybersecurity expert David Gyedu spoke about the growing threat of cybercrime.

Data from the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) show that 4,938 incidents were recorded in the first nine months of 2026, already exceeding the 4,604 incidents recorded throughout 2025.

Online fraud was the main contributor, accounting for about 37 per cent of reported incidents between January and July.

The Authority also identified AI-generated deepfake scams, brand impersonation, organised scam centres, automated fraud schemes and violations of child online safety as emerging threats.

Mr Gyedu said organisations were also facing serious cyberattacks.

He cited the reported attack on cryptocurrency exchange Binance, in which more than US$6 billion was allegedly stolen, with about US$3 billion yet to be recovered, as evidence that no country was immune to cybercrime.

He also referred to an INTERPOL report indicating that some financial institutions in Ghana suffered ransomware attacks last year, including one incident in which more than 100 terabytes of data were encrypted.

“All that you see is pay this money before you can have access to your own files,” he said, describing the demands made by ransomware attackers.

Mr Gyedu said Ghana was a heavy consumer of technology but lagged in public awareness and online safety practices.

He called for sustained public education and stronger cybersecurity measures within organisations, particularly as the Christmas season approaches.
