Giant Food and Food Lion shoppers in the D.C. area may have noticed that the stores’ websites and apps were down over the last few days.
“We’re addressing a network security issue and have proactively taken some systems offline to help protect them,” Landover, Maryland-based Giant Food, which shares a parent company with Food Lion, said in a statement.
Ahold Delhaize, their Dutch owner, said Monday that it is taking “precautionary measures following cybersecurity incident” and that its stores are open and serving customers.
Customers may still place orders through Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats for delivery, a Giant spokesperson said, and use kiosks in the stores to load coupons and reward offers to their Giant loyalty cards.
There are 159 Giant Food locations in Maryland, D.C. and Virginia, and 338 Food Lion stores in Maryland and Virginia.
Meanwhile authorities in Europe are investigating cybersecurity incidents involving supermarket chains in the Netherlands and France. Attackers who remotely took control of refrigeration systems in hundreds of supermarkets and independent stores across France on Monday sent temperatures in the units as high as 122 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Dutch National Cybersecurity Center said several cyber incidents had affected Europe’s food sector, but it saw “no reason at this time to believe that these incidents are linked.”
