A leading criminologist says abuse cases that occur in institutional childcare are more likely to be detected by police investigations of online material than tip-offs from the centres.

“Online activity is what makes offenders visible to authorities,” said Professor Michael Salter, a University of NSW professor who is director of the local branch of the Global Child Safety Institute, called Childlight UNSW.
