Online scams have become a growing menace in India, with thousands of people reportedly losing lakhs and even crores of rupees to cyber fraud. The government has a dedicated platform, the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP), where victims can report cybercrime and seek help in freezing fraudulent transactions. Now, the government has introduced another platform called Money Restoration Module, to help those eligible seek the return of money that has been frozen in a scammer’s or beneficiary’s bank account.
Launched earlier this year by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) under the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Money Restoration Module (MRM) is designed to help cyber-fraud victims seek the return of their money if it has been frozen or held in the scammer’s or beneficiary’s bank account. The process can be initiated online, so you don’t have to visit a bank or government office to submit your restoration request.
But do note that the MRM portal does not guarantee that you will get your money back. The money first needs to be traced and frozen in the scammer’s or beneficiary’s account. Only then can you request a refund through the legal process.
So, how do you file for a refund on MRM? Here is a step-by-step guide.
How to use the Money Restoration Module
Report the cyber fraud: First and foremost, if you realise you have lost money to a cyber scam, report it immediately by calling the 1930 cybercrime helpline or filing a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). Reporting the fraud quickly can improve the chances of authorities freezing the money before scammers move it elsewhere.
Check if your money has been frozen: Once you have reported the fraud, check whether the money has been traced and frozen. You can apply for restoration only if your complaint has resulted in an eligible amount being traced and held in the scammer’s or beneficiary’s bank account.
Raise a refund request: To request a refund, visit the Money Restoration Module (MRM) and click on “Raise Refund Request”. Enter the 14-digit NCRP acknowledgement number you received when filing your cybercrime complaint and verify it using an OTP.
Add your bank details: Once you log in, check the complaint and refund details shown on the portal. Enter the bank account details where you want the restored money to be credited. Make sure the details are correct to avoid delays.
Upload the required documents: You will need to upload a copy of your PAN card. If you have a relevant court order, you can upload that as well.
Submit the request: Once you submit the form, the portal will generate a 14-digit request ID or Unique Request Number (URN). Keep it safe, as you can use it to track your request.
Complete the legal process: You may also be asked to submit an indemnity bond to the police. After this, the restoration request will be processed by the authorities, banks and other concerned institutions as per the applicable legal procedure.
