Cleared/260 WordsTrichy: A government-aided middle school near Uppiliyapuram in Trichy district has launched a child safety ambassador programme, an initiative training 20 senior students on road safety awareness and to guide younger wards in commuting safely between the school and houses. The student ambassadors are given orange vests and caps to accompany their juniors in crossing roads, boarding buses, and walking towards homes from the bus stops in nearby villages.V Ravichandran, headmaster of the Venkatachalapuram govt aided middle school, said that the school has 212 students including 119 boys and 93 girls, studying between classes I and VIII. While a section of parents drops and picks up their wards independently, many students use public transport to reach their houses in villages situated within a 4km radius of the school.As a part of ensuring the safety of children during their commute, the school trained 20 students of class VIII with interests in road safety and a passion for developing leadership qualities.“The primary responsibility of the child safety ambassadors is to accompany their juniors from their neighbourhoods to school every morning and evening. We have formed 10 groups with two ambassadors each. One will lead the queue and the other will be at the end of the queue. Teachers will monitor the progress of the initiative,” Ravichandran told TOI.The HM added that the initiative was implemented to bring relief to parents and increase their confidence in the school.The idea was conceived and implemented with the guidance of S Sivakumar, former principal, District Institute of Education and Training (DIET).
