Govt Sounds Alert Over School Safety: Urges States to Act Immediately
New Delhi: In response to a series of tragic incidents reported from schools across the country, the Ministry of Education has issued an urgent advisory to all States and Union Territories, calling for immediate and strict measures to ensure the safety of children in educational institutions.
In a digital communication sent to all Chief Secretaries, the Ministry highlighted recent cases where children have either lost their lives or suffered serious injuries due to preventable infrastructure failures or lapses in basic safety standards. The Ministry noted that many of these incidents could have been avoided with timely audits and a proactive approach.
Quoting the urgency of the matter, the letter says, “To avoid any further loss of life due to lack of preparedness or dilapidated infrastructure, proactive measures, vigilance and unwavering commitment to safety are the needs of the hour.”
The Ministry has reminded States of the “Guidelines on School Safety and Security” (2021) and the National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) School Safety Guidelines (2016), asking authorities to refer to these while framing or revising safety protocols.
Key Directives Issued:
1. Immediate Safety Audits:
All school buildings and public places accessed by children must undergo safety audits to check structural strength, electrical wiring, emergency exits, and fire safety mechanisms.
2. Training & Preparedness:
Teachers, staff, and students should be trained in emergency response, including evacuation drills and basic first aid. Schools are advised to conduct regular mock drills with the help of fire, police, and health departments.
3. Mental Health Focus:
Emphasizing that safety isn’t just physical, the Ministry has asked schools to strengthen mental health support through counselling, peer groups, and community engagement.
4. Strict Reporting System:
Any dangerous incident or near-miss must be reported to the designated State or UT authority within 24 hours. Authorities have been asked to fix accountability for any delay or negligence.
5. Public Vigilance:
Parents, local leaders, and community members are encouraged to report unsafe conditions they observe in schools, transport vehicles, or public areas frequented by children.
The Ministry has asked that all Education Departments, School Boards, and affiliated institutions act without delay. The letter closes with a clear reminder of shared responsibility:
“Let us reaffirm our commitment to ensure that no child or youth is put at risk due to preventable circumstances.”
With lakhs of students attending schools daily, the government’s push is a call for action — not only for officials, but also for communities, educators, and parents to prioritize the safety and well-being of India’s future.
