GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) — The Grand Island Police Department began a child safety operation at Grand Island Public Schools on Tuesday.
Officers will be present during drop-off times at several Grand Island schools. During that time, officers will look inside vehicles to see that students are seated properly. Police said the main purpose is to help reduce accidents.
How the checks work
Officer Brett Renz, a school resource officer for Grand Island Public Schools, said many parents are welcoming.
“A lot of parents will roll down their windows and greet us and let us just verify and let us know that their kids are buckled in safely, and if they’re not we will take the proactive approach and try to teach them the importance of why seat belts are a thing,” Renz said.
Common mistakes
Renz said there are some common mistakes every year.
“Sometimes the little guys will squirm out of car seats and the parent don’t know, its not that we are trying to catch anybody in the act we are trying to teach and train and work with the community,” Renz said.
The practice will take place every Tuesday and Thursday through Oct. 22, starting Tuesday.
The Grand Island Police Department encourages all parents and caregivers to review their children’s seat belt use.
