JOHN DAY – Grant County Education Service District School Safety Prevention Specialist Gordon Larson was in KJDY Studios recently to appear on an episode of Coffee Time to discuss cyber safety for Grant County students. Larson encouraged parents to communicate regularly with their children about dangers online, and said they might consider not taking their child’s phone as a punishment:
“Oftentimes [parents’] first reaction is to take away the device. When I went out to all the schools [in Grant County] and talked about cyber bullying and cyber dangers that face our kids; the first thing [I ask] when I’m talking alone to the kids in groups is, ‘Hey, do you tell your parents about these unsolicited things that come across your device? Maybe it’s a picture, or some kind of adult or solacious conversation the kid has had—do you tell your parents about that?’ And oftentimes, no, they don’t. And I ask why, and it’s because they’re in fear of losing their device.”
Larson also wanted parents to know that soon when children come home for summer break, many of the online protections offered by the ESD at school will not be there while they are away for the summer.
