GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich., (WPBN/WGTU) — The Great Lakes Child Safety Conference took place at Traverse City Central High School on Thursday, May 7, to address key issues in internet safety, school security and children’s physical and mental health.
A panel of experts was assembled to discuss the ongoing issues. The floor was open to educators, law enforcement, safety professionals and community members across northern Michigan.
Online abuse and cyberbullying have become more common among children. Safety experts are looking at new ways to prevent online crime as well as general student safety.
“It involves everybody, while safety and security and the police may call the plays sometimes, every single person in the community, and that includes students and parents and staff, are a part of that team,” said Chris Rozman, deputy chief of police at Michigan State University.
More and more behavioral and mental health experts are being brought into schools as the lines of communication open up for struggling students.
