In the first seven months of the year, from January to July, 29 cybercrime cases involving extortion of over ₹2 crore each have been registered in Gujarat under the guise of digital arrests.
Sources reveal that there are numerous additional complaints involving smaller amounts filed with cybercrime cells across districts and city commissionerates in the state. Alarmingly, despite these incidents occurring almost daily, both the public and police have been largely unsuccessful in preventing them.
According to officials from the CID Cyber Crime Cell, the majority of those falling prey to these high-value frauds are well-educated individuals. Despite continuous awareness campaigns and public advisories issued by the government and police regarding digital arrest scams, people still fall victim, pay the demanded money, and only then approach the police to report the fraud.
High-value cases involving frauds exceeding ₹2 crore are registered and investigated by the State Cyber Crime Cell at the CID Crime Headquarters in Gandhinagar. In contrast, cases involving lower amounts are handled by cybercrime police stations operating at the district or city level.
Between January and July 2025 alone, the CID Cyber Crime Cell in Gandhinagar registered 29 such cases, each involving fraud of more than ₹2 crore. However, the total amount of extortion from these incidents has not yet been disclosed.
