Hackers gained unauthorized access to data belonging to around 31,000 legal entities in Liechtenstein after a cyberattack targeted the country’s Register of Beneficial Owners, prompting the government to establish a crisis team.
The attack was detected after an unknown perpetrator gained digital access to the register on July 30, the Liechtenstein government said Sunday.
Authorities identified irregularities, moved to secure the data and shut down the affected system.
“Data copies of approximately 31,000 legal entities were illegally accessed,” the government said in a statement.
Officials were informed on July 31 that the attack may have been successful. Preliminary investigation results confirming the breach were delivered to the government on the afternoon of Aug. 1.
The government said there was currently no indication that information stored in the system had been modified or deleted.
The Register of Beneficial Owners contains information identifying the people who ultimately own or control companies, foundations and trusts. It is maintained as part of Liechtenstein’s efforts to combat money laundering and terrorist financing.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and assess the extent of the data exposure.
The government has not publicly identified the attackers or disclosed whether the stolen information has been published or used.
