Rockstar Games confirms a limited corporate data breach linked to ShinyHunters, with no impact on players, amid ongoing ransom demands and investigation

Rockstar Games had confirmed that some of its data was compromised in a breach led by a third-party provider. A group called ShinyHunters claimed responsibility, saying it had gained access to the company’s Snowflake instances via Anodot, a cost-monitoring and analytics service. The group has been demanding a ransom by 14th April, or it would proceed to leak the data it has stolen.

In a recent statement to Kotaku, Rockstar Games revealed that the data compromised was limited in scope and that such a breach would have no impact on our organisation or our players. While it is still unclear which data was compromised, it appears that the hack targeted corporate data rather than any player information. Reports indicate that the data stolen might have financial records and data from companies like Sony and Microsoft in the haul.

ShinyHunters have been operating since 2020 and typically go after large organisations. Before Rockstar, its past targets have been Microsoft, Ticketmaster, Cisco, AT&T, and Wattpad; they either try to ransom data or sell it. This is not the first time that Rockstar has fallen prey to hacking.

Until now, the hacker group has not revealed what kind of data or files they have access to and could leak further. Though it is believed that they do not have access to passwords or personal player data. Instead, the hack was focused on corporate information and assets, which may include contracts, financial documents, marketing plans, and other data.

In the year 2022, Rockstar Games had suffered an infamous hack that led to a lot of early GTA 6 gameplay and assets being leaked online. The hack was pulled off by a teenager who was able to gain access to the company’s Slack chat service.
