Hackers associated with Russian intelligence services are conducting a large-scale campaign to steal access data to messenger accounts, including Signal.
This was announced by the Center for Countering Disinformation.
According to the CPD, the US Federal Bureau of Investigation claims that the hacking operation is aimed at individuals — US officials, military personnel, politicians, and journalists — who represent “high intelligence value.”
Criminals have already managed to gain access to thousands of user accounts. This way, they can read private correspondence, view contact lists, and send messages on behalf of the page owner.
In addition, hackers will be able to use stolen accounts for further phishing attacks.
“It is important that the encryption of messengers has not been broken. Compromise occurs through the actions of the users themselves — hackers impersonate representatives of security services and lure confirmation codes,” the Center explained.
It is added that Dutch intelligence services have previously also reported on the Russian campaign against Signal and WhatsApp users.
