WASHINGTON (TNND) — A digital extortion group called “ShinyHunters” said that it breached the FBI and stole data on many employees.
A representative of the group called TinyHunters told a media outlet called 404 Media that the information on the FBI employees included their phone numbers, names and addresses.
“We hacked the FBI. We hold data on all FBI employees and applicants,” the statement to the group reads.
As of now, the FBI has not responded to the claim that it was hacked.
ShinyHunters also reportedly defaced the FBI jobs website. The defacement says “this site has been seized by ShinyHunters.”
As of late Tuesday afternoon, the FBI jobs website said its system was unavailable.
A screenshot shows the application site to FBI jobs is unavailable as of September 22 (FBIjobs.gov). A hacker group claimed to have infiltrated FBI databases including its job website.
It also reportedly says, “All FBI data was compromised including PII/PHI [personally identifiable information and protected health information] on incumbent and former FBI employees and all applicant information. We have a lot more than we claim here.”
404 Media asked if ShinyHunters was attempting to extort the FBI but they said it wasn’t financially motivated.
A representative for the group said,“what we plan to do is not something I’d call extortion, maybe coercion.”
