EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) – Children and teens are accessing technology earlier than ever.
As June marks internet safety month, local officials are teaching families several safety tips.
Local child safety advocates say anyone at any time can be targeted for online crimes, especially children.
They say tens of thousands of children are victims of online abuse every year.
Experts say prevention starts with parents, who should have the conversation with their kids about who they talk to online.
“So what we want parents to be able to say is ‘if you are in an unsafe situation, I wanna help you get out of it, and I wanna make sure that you are okay,’ because this happens to one in four children now. One in four children will be solicitated online, and it’s probably going to happen to your kids,” said Holly’s House Executive Director Kristine Cordts.
Holly’s House also has a website dedicated to keeping kids safe online.
