HRECC shuts down Facebook page to ‘enhance cybersecurity’ | #hacking | #cybersecurity | #infosec | #comptia | #pentest | #ransomware

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) – The Harrisonburg Rockingham Emergency Communications Center has deactivated its Facebook page as part of an ongoing commitment to enhancing cybersecurity, according to a post from the page made before it was shut down Thursday.

Michael Parks, spokesperson for the City of Harrisonburg, said deactivating the page helps make sure HRECC stays focused on serving the community.

”I think we do a great job of that through our fire department pages, our police department pages, public works, the main city pages. The ECC page, that’s not really the primary function of the folks at HRECC. They have a number of other duties that they need to be focusing on. Community outreach is not one of those. That’s what my department and other departments are responsible [for],” Parks said. ”It’s a responsibility that [was kind of] added to ECC over the years, but as we’ve looked at it, we’ve realized that’s not their primary function. We have other people that should be doing those tasks. ECC needs to focus on the emergency communications part of making sure our police [and] our fire rescue have the information they need.”

Although HRECC’s page is now gone, Parks said people should follow the other public safety partners on social media. You can also sign up for Harrisonburg-Rockingham emergency alerts here.
