Health Sciences Centre Winnipeg is responding to a ransomware incident affecting certain facility maintenance systems, including HVAC and door access.
Shared Health said late Monday that patient care and clinical operations remain unaffected and fully operational, adding that anyone needing to attend the facility for care should do so as clinical services continue uninterrupted.
Based on the investigation conducted to date, there is no indication that patients have been affected.
Ransomware is a cyber attack where the attacker then demands a payment — a ransom — in exchange for the digital key required to restore access to computer files.
Upon learning of the incident, HSC launched an investigation to determine its nature and scope, involving a thorough review of affected systems. At this time, the incident appears to have only impacted certain facility maintenance systems, and the investigation is ongoing.
Officials say they are treating the incident as a high priority and working to address the situation as safely and securely.
The hospital has notified the Government of Manitoba and partners, and has engaged with expert third parties to resolve the incident as soon as possible.
