A new report shows Illinoisans lost more than $535 million to the hands of cyber criminals in 2025.
The state also saw nearly 33,000 complaints, according to the FBI in their 2025 Internet Crime Report.
Nationwide, investment-related fraud again made up the largest component of the losses, followed by business email compromises and tech support scams. Losses in 2025 totaled at more than $20 billion.
Illinois experienced the eighth-most loss when compared with other states. California saw the most loss at more than $3.6 billion, followed by Texas and Florida.
For the number of complaints, Illinois notched at fifth place. California brought the most complaints, with more than 116,000, and again followed by Texas and Florida.
Reporting to the Internet Crime Complaint Center has surged since its founding in 2000.
“We received a few thousand complaints per month in our early days. We now average almost 3,000 complaints per day,” wrote Jose A. Perez, who is operations director for criminal and cyber branch at the FBI.
Most of the complaints are coming from people over 60 years old. The number of complaints and the reported losses both decrease by age group.
