Independent Artist of the Week: CRWLR | #deepweb

“Sydney musicians do contain multitudes. You just have to, it’s the way the world operates when you’re a creative.” CRWLR, the solo project of Sydney-based multi-instrumentalist heli roni, has been around the local scene for years in different forms. First as a member of now defunct acts like hardcore band NASHO and noisy club trio MANA, then with live performance collaborations with artists including Abyss X, SOLSA and Alice Skye at Soft Centre, Dark Mofo and Absorbed. CRWLR is a culmination of Heli Roni’s diverse musical upbringing, from early studies in jazz guitar and opera, to formative experiences in the Melbourne and Berlin club scenes.  “Guitar is my first love, I played it as a form of escapism growing up… A lot of these riffs were developed when I was a kid.”  His first solo release EP1 , a couple of tracks out via cult-fave Dero Arcade, is the perfect entry point to the world of CRWLR. An eccentric blend of gabber footwork, pop melodies and gargantuan guitar riffs, CRWLR brings the gritty melodrama of black-metal to the early hours of a warehouse wave. A union you might question on paper, but makes perfect sense once you hear it unfold.  Performing the songs live on fbi’s Deep Web recently, CRWLR arrived at the studio decked out in red latex and a mesh, beaded veil , Gibson Explorer in hand.  Chaotic, glamorous, totally committed.
