MISHAWAKA, Ind. (WNDU) – Wednesday marked Indiana Child Safety Call-In Day, an effort designed to mobilize community voices in support of meaningful child safety legislation.

Participants were provided with guidance, talking points, and resources to engage directly with lawmakers and decision-makers to make the case for children. Advocates called legislators and other elected officials to campaign for child safety reform in the state.

Organizers of Indiana Child Safety Call-In Day said the effort is about showing up with love, urgency, and accountability for every child in Indiana.

The push comes as organizers say child suicide rates are up in the state. They say one in five children have considered suicide.

“We have child safety gaps that we’ve uncovered in this process from the schools to the department of child services, to the juvenile system, to health care, to the family court system,” said Rachel Van Alstine, a child and parent advocate. “All of these state systems that are tasked with ensuring our children’s safety. There are massive gaps in child safety here. But there’s no one on the other side of this to hold the system accountable that are perpetuating the abuse.”

The event was part of the broader Indiana Child Safety Campaign, a movement that calls for state legislators to put child safety and human rights as their top priority.
