An Iranian-linked hacker group known as Handala has threatened to launch broader cyberattacks against US critical infrastructure after claiming responsibility for a cyberattack on industrial systems in the state of Maryland.
In a statement carried by Iran’s Mizan News Agency, the group said that, following its “sophisticated cyberattack” on Maryland’s operational technology (OT) infrastructure, “America’s critical infrastructure is on the front line of our future attacks,” News.Az reports.
Handala claimed that its ability to manipulate programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems represented only part of its offensive cyber capabilities.
The group warned that future attacks could target US water, electricity and transport networks.
The statement came after the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) recently acknowledged in a security advisory that cyber actors were targeting industrial equipment manufactured by Rockwell Automation, Schneider Electric and Siemens.
