DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. (WHP) — Health officials say overexposure to blue light could lead to vision problems.
Health officials are warning of the dangers blue light exposure can cause in children and teens.
That’s a short wavelength of light that produces higher amounts of energy.
Before we head to bed, some of us have a cell phone or tablet handy.
However, an Optometrist at UPMC in North Central PA, Dr. Keying Yan, says there could be extra exposure to blue light coming from our digital devices.
That exposure can be harmful to our eyes.
“There are some concerns that being on the screens for too long can cause computer vision symptoms or digital eye strain,” says Dr. Yan.
If you think your child’s been overly exposed to blue light some of the symptoms to look out for include headaches, fatigue, dry eyes, or a blurry vision.
Despite blue light exposure being good for our eyes during the day if we are exposed to it before bed it can disrupt our sleep.
To prevent running into this problem Dr. Yan says there’s a 2020 rule you can use to help lower your risk of overexposure.
“There’s a 2020 rule that we usually recommend; it every 20 minutes looking at a screen you want to take a break for 20 seconds where you look somewhere far away or 20 feet away”, says Dr. Yan.
You can also limit your digital device use before bed, purchase blue light-blocking lenses, or try putting your iPhone in night mode to dim that lighting.
Keep in mind, that putting your phone on night mode creates a yellow lens.
Dr. Yan says blue light is filtered the more yellow your lenses are.
