Deputy Prime Minister and National Security Minister, Dr. Horace Chang, says Jamaicans’ growing use of online shopping brings bigger risks of cyberattacks.
He told a CyberSMART Community event in St. James that the country must boost awareness and education so people know how cybercrime works and how to protect themselves. He said Jamaica’s fast digital shift in banking, shopping, education, and social life requires an immediate and strong response from authorities.
In the first half of 2025, more than 200 cyber incidents were reported. These included phishing emails, stolen bank details, hacked social media accounts, and identity theft. Dr. Chang warned that cybercrime is evolving, and in some cases, digital crimes are linked to violence and even homicide.
This, he said, puts more pressure on police and security teams. The government is increasing cyber defences, raising awareness, and working with partners to coordinate a national response. Dr. Chang said budget allocations for cyber infrastructure are rising, helping law enforcement monitor threats and improve investigations.
He stressed that education and training are crucial to resilience, giving Jamaicans the knowledge to protect themselves and respond to threats.
The Ministry will expand awareness campaigns, build partnerships, and use new technology to strengthen online safety. The CyberSMART Community programme remains at the centre of Jamaica’s digital security plans.
