Faisal Mahmud06 November 2026•Update : 06 November 2026Japan on Friday unveiled emergency cybersecurity measures, including artificial intelligence-powered threat detection and specialist response teams, following a series of major personal data breaches. The package, approved at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, aims to strengthen defenses against unauthorized access and improve responses to cyberattacks, Kyodo News reported. The measures focus on four areas: AI-based security improvements, enhanced intelligence gathering, strategic responses to attacks and stronger assistance for victims. The government will establish a “top gun” team of cybersecurity specialists to counter hackers and deploy AI to identify vulnerabilities in computer systems.A separate “rescue team” comprising public and private sector experts will assist companies hit by cyberattacks, while another unit will advise businesses facing potential threats.Tokyo will also expand its active cyber defense capabilities, allowing authorities to proactively access servers used by attackers under legislation that took effect in October. The government has allocated 10 billion yen ($63 million) from fiscal 2026 reserve funds to strengthen cybersecurity, including police intelligence-gathering capabilities. The measures follow several high-profile breaches, including a ransomware attack targeting GMO Internet Group, which prompted Takaichi to order an emergency response package last week.Japan has been strengthening its cybersecurity framework amid growing concerns over attacks targeting businesses, critical infrastructure and national security.
