Lt. Gov. Jay Collins will hold a news conference on Monday to share his plans for making life more affordable for Florida seniors as part of his run for Governor.
Collins said he will introduce his “Live Florida” initiative at the news conference, which starts at 10 a.m. in Lady Lake. The event will take place at McCall’s Tavern on Alverez Ave.
The initiative aims to help seniors across Florida stay financially secure and independent as they get older. Collins plans to talk about the main challenges facing the state’s growing senior population.
Collins will also share his ideas for reducing fraud and cybersecurity threats that target retirees. He plans to discuss ways to boost consumer protections and public safety to help protect seniors and their quality of life.
Collins has pointed out that rising costs for housing, insurance, healthcare, and other daily expenses are hitting seniors especially hard.
As Lt. Governor, he has worked to protect seniors before. In November, he helped start Operation Senior Shield, a program designed to help seniors avoid scams in Florida.
“Senior Shield provides timely text and email alerts, so older adults and caregivers can stay ahead of scammers,” Collins said at a launch event in Jacksonville last year.
“We’re going to make you hard targets. You have to have the information to understand what’s going on. When a new threat appears, Floridians will know about it before the scammers get to their door, their inbox, or their phone. That’s how we keep you alert, keep you informed and secure.”
As the Republican lieutenant to Ron DeSantis, Collins faces tough competition in the GOP Primary Election on August 18. He admitted that he is up against steep odds in the race against U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds, the current front-runner.
“You can’t hide in the shadows. You can’t pull a Biden and hide in a corner behind your couch in the basement. You’ve got to come out and debate, and I’m very frustrated that Byron Donalds is unwilling to do that. I think he’s got to stand up and show up. If you’re that far ahead, then what are you scared of? Step up, communicate, show up at a debate stage,” Collins said during an appearance on “Sunday Morning Futures” on Fox News.
