Jefferson County sheriff’s office warns seniors about scams
JEFFERSON COUNTY, Ala. —
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is warning seniors about scams and providing tips to help them avoid becoming victims.
Officials have been visiting local senior centers to share warning signs and advice on what to do if they encounter a scam.
The FBI reports that adults over 60 filed more than 200,000 complaints last year, with victims losing thousands of dollars on average.
“It’s very easy for them to target seniors because they are unsuspecting. But one of the main things is (that) scammers don’t show any age. They will scam anyone,” the sheriff’s office said.
The sheriff’s office advises individuals to stop and ask questions before handing over any money.
Scams can be reported to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office or directly to the Federal Trade Commission.
