Residents in parts of Ladysmith continue to face water interruptions amid a salary dispute involving a newly appointed security company and its employees.

uThukela District Municipality says ongoing water interruptions affecting parts of Ladysmith are linked to a dispute between a newly appointed security company and its employees over salaries.
According to the Ladysmith Civic Association, a security guard shut down the eMbizeni Water Treatment Plant over unpaid wages.
But officials at the district municipality say it’s inaccurate to suggest a security guard is holding it to ransom.
uThukela officials say they met with the company on Wednesday to discuss the workers’ demands, including adjustments to guard’s salaries.
The municipality says it’s now waiting for the company to conclude its engagements with its employees.

The Ladysmith Civic Association member, Maseehullah Gaffar, says residents in areas including Acacia Vale, Hillside, Rose Park and parts of Ezakheni have been repeatedly affected by the water outages.
”Because how did you let the security company not get paid and then they shut down the entire plant? It’s unconstitutional. Things like this are not heard of. It’s happening here in our district municipality, and nothing is done about it. No accountability. Nothing! You can’t carry on like this.
I spoke to the general manager for water and sanitation who confirmed that the story is true, that the security company hasn’t been paid and they shut the plant down. Then the community must suffer.”
