Local security company’s hiring blitz eyes multiple locales

‘Hiring a successful security guard goes beyond just finding someone to stand a post,’ says official looking to fill positions in Orillia and area

The only thing certain about uncertainty is the need to protect ourselves against even more uncertainty.

To that end, Commissionaires, one of the country’s most well-known security and security-related services organizations, has embarked on a massive hiring blitz, looking to fill more than 100 security positions locally due to “an increased and immediate demand.”

According to Shawn Thompson, recruiting and training manager for Commissionaires, the uncertainty in today’s economic climate is forcing many organizations, including one of Commissionaires’ key clients, the federal government, to step up and make security “more integrated and visible” than it was just a few years ago.

“This means consistent protection across multiple sites and locations for which guards are trained in de-escalation techniques, fluency in technology and emergency procedures,” Thompson said in an email. “The increase in staff will ensure a continuous, high-visibility presence that deters situations before they happen.”

Thompson says the company is looking to fill both full- and part-time roles at Canadian Forces Base Borden, as well as Barrie, Orillia, Midland, Meaford and Tobermory.

The roles pay between $24 and $27 per hour and include a benefit package that includes dental, health and vision coverage.

Thompson says the roles are ideal for military veterans, reservists, military family members or anyone looking for a long-term career in security.

He says previous work in law enforcement, military service or private security is preferred but not required as Commissionaires provides full training.

“Hiring a successful security guard goes beyond just finding someone to stand a post,” Thompson said. “While we will provide skills training, we are seeking candidates who have a customer service focus, strong situational awareness and communication skills, can do well in conflict resolution and de-escalation, and demonstrate reliability and punctuality.”

He says the core requirements include being able to pass a comprehensive background check and obtain a reliability security clearance (minimum of five years of residency in Canada) or a secret security clearance (minimum of 10 years of residency in Canada).

Candidates must also be able to obtain an Ontario security guard licence.

“We are actively interviewing and extending offers to candidates,” Thompson said. “The hiring process will continue into the spring as we fill our current vacancies.”
