Williamsport, Pa. — A Lycoming County judge revoked bail for a Williamsport man accused of committing sex crimes against children while released. The bail motion stems from 41-year-old John Mitchell Poorman Jr.’s May arrest on child sex-related charges and subsequent allegations that he reoffended in Clinton County while free on that bail.Poorman remains in custody in connection with the Clinton County case in which bail was denied.Related coverage:Lycoming County case background and chargesPoorman was arrested on May 21 by Williamsport police and charged in connection with alleged sexual assaults on a young girl that occurred throughout 2024 in his West Fourth Street home.Authorities alleged the incidents included sexual contact sometimes occurring in the presence of the child’s mother. The child and mother had been living in the home for several years, according to police reports.Magisterial District Judge Christian David Frey set bail at $50,000 unsecured on the day of arrest. Poorman was released the same day. A preliminary hearing was held in June and formal arraignment scheduled for July. Criminal pre-trials are listed for January 2027.An expedited motion to revoke bail was filed in September following the new Clinton County charges. Hearings on the motion were continued before being scheduled for Oct. 22. Poorman remained incarcerated at the Clinton County Prison.Clinton County charges and bail denialWhile free on the Lycoming unsecured bail, Poorman was accused of further offenses in Mill Hall, Clinton County, involving a girl under the age of 14 during the evening of June 17 and early morning of June 18 of this year.Police alleged Poorman went to the child’s home while she was alone and engaged in forcible sexual acts, including digital penetration and forced oral sex, and that he was later observed masturbating.Mill Hall Borough Police obtained a warrant. Poorman was taken into custody on Sept. 9 at the Clinton County Courthouse. District Attorney Dave Strouse later withdrew the original complaint and approved a new one containing 23 counts. Those new charges were then bound over for trial after a preliminary hearing on Oct. 12 before Magisterial District Judge Frank Mills.Judge Heidi Wright denied bail, with the docket noting the defendant was “believed to be danger to society. Specifically, minor children.”At the preliminary hearing, Poorman’s attorney argued for bail so he could better assist in his defense. Strouse opposed the request, citing public safety and Poorman’s prior criminal history spanning roughly two decades. Judge Mills denied bail and ordered Poorman held at the Clinton County Correctional Facility pending the outcome of the case. Formal arraignment is set for Nov. 24.Overview of chargesIn the Lycoming case, police said Poorman repeatedly engaged in sexual contact with a young girl, including “grinding” on her — sometimes in front of her mother — and taking her to a bedroom. In the Clinton case, the allegations involve more serious forcible acts against another child while Poorman was out on bail from the first case.Poorman, listed in earlier reports as the owner of a tree service, faces the pending Lycoming charges while already held without bail in Clinton County. In Clinton County, Poorman was initially charged with attempted rape by forcible compulsion, attempted involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors, and endangering the welfare of children.District Attorney Strouse withdrew that complaint and approved a new one with 23 counts, including multiple first-degree felony counts of rape by forcible compulsion, unlawful contact with a minor, statutory sexual assault, and involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, including with a child younger than 14. He also faces counts of sexual assault, aggravated indecent assault, corruption of minors, indecent exposure, and indecent assault. The Oct. 22 Lycoming hearing was scheduled to address whether the original $50,000 unsecured bail should be revoked in light of the subsequent allegations and custody status. The charges held for Lycoming County court are endangering the welfare of children, corruption of minors, indecent assault without consent, and indecent assault of a person less than 16 years of age.The cases remain active in both counties.Lycoming docket sheetClinton docket sheet
