A man in his late twenties was arrested and faces charges in connection to the shooting of a Philadelphia School Safety Officer on June 29, police said on Monday.
According to police, Ariza Giansteban was taken into custody on July 5 in Paramus, New Jersey, and is being extradited to Philadelphia for the incident, which left a 68-year-old retired police officer in critical condition with multiple gunshot wounds.
The safety officer was working overnight at Kensington High School for the Creative and Performing Arts, which is operating as a shelter for residents who were impacted by a recent apartment fire, when he tried to intervene during a suspected road rage incident.
As the officer tried to help, the driver of a white 2017-2019 Kia Sportage shot at him and then fled the scene, police said.
The safety officer has not been identified.
