A man has been charged with making child exploitation material after allegedly using artificial intelligence to “nudify” images of kids sourced from social media. The 41-year-old Gold Coast man was arrested on Wednesday after investigators executed a search warrant on a home in Arundel as part of a nine-month investigation by Australian Federal Police. His arrest came after Australian Border Force officers identified alleged child abuse material on the man’s phone at Brisbane International Airport on February 4.A comprehensive forensics examination of the device allegedly uncovered thousands of digitally sexualised images of children.Police will allege the material was generated using AI to “nudify” images of clothed children sourced from social media accounts. The pictures included at least three children located in Australia, police said. Two mobile phones, which will be subject to further forensic examination, were seized during the search of the home Arundel. The man was charged with making child exploitation material. The offence carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. AFP Detective Superintendent Frank Rayner said evolving technology brought fresh challenges, but officers remained committed to protecting children online.”As AI becomes increasingly integrated into our everyday technology, we are seeing a rise in its misuse to create extreme and unlawful sexual depictions of children,” Det Supt Rayner said.”The creation, possession or distribution of any form of child abuse material – whether real or AI-generated – is illegal and will not be tolerated.””To those abusing this technology, be warned that the AFP will investigate and bring you before the court.”ABF Acting Superintendent Melissa Nicholson warned ABF officers were trained to find child abuse material.“Child abuse material is child abuse material, no matter how it is made,” Act Supt Nicholson said.“Manipulating an image of a child with AI to create sexualised content is exploitation, and the harm to that child can be very real and lasting.“Our officers are trained to detect this vile material, and when they find it, we work closely with the AFP and other law enforcement partners to bring those responsible before the courts.”The case was investigated by the AFP’s Northern Command Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team.
