The FBI says it has nabbed a key figure behind a hack of its own ranks. Agents arrested a Canadian citizen in Pennsylvania this week, described by officials as a primary co-conspirator in the breach that exposed sensitive data on thousands of FBI employees, reports USA Today. His name and the precise charges have not been released. Director Kash Patel said the arrest is part of a broader push to dismantle ShinyHunters, the hacking crew that claimed it stole personal details ranging from home addresses and Social Security numbers to family information from an FBI jobs portal.

The bureau has blamed the incident on an unpatched third-party platform run by a contractor tied to Accenture, says it has cut ties with that firm, and reports multiple arrests in the wider crackdown on a group accused of breaching more than 140 organizations. The New York Times describes ShinyHunters as “a loose collective of young English-speaking hackers in several countries across the globe,” adding that the group has been behind some of the most serious corporate breaches of late. Its hackers often agree not to make stolen information public in exchange for money, per the Times.
