OCALA, Fla. – A 7-year-old boy was choked, punched, and shoved on a Marion County school bus on his way to Marion Oaks Elementary, and his mother says no one from the school ever called her.The disturbing video, shared with News 6 through the Neighborhood Network, shows an older boy climbing on top of the child and choking him during the ride. The 7-year-old described what happened in his own words.“We were in the bus at that time, so I had no advantage. He was bigger than me. He was nine years old. And he like, he climbed on top of me, and yeah, he climbed on top of me. I couldn’t breathe. I was trying to fight back.”He said the other boy choked him three times before the bus driver stepped in. “The bus driver stopped it before he could do worse,” he said.Mother learned about attack from her son — not the schoolThe incident happened on Tuesday. His mother, Brittany Billups, says she found out only after her son came home and told her he had been in a fight. She says she never received any communication from the school.“It makes me want to cry to even talk about it because it makes me remember what happened to my child on that bus and nobody was able to help him,” Billups said. When Billups went to the district the next day, she was directed to the transportation office. The transportation office told her the matter becomes the school’s responsibility once the bus driver files a referral. The district has since confirmed to News 6 it is investigating the incident.Billups says seeing the video made the situation even harder to process.“When I tell you my heart dropped into my stomach, I felt just queasy, angry at the same time, hurt.”Mother files report with sheriff’s officeThe district investigation isn’t enough for Billups. She has filed a report with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, who also tells News 6 this is an active investigation. She also says the other boy involved was suspended — but not until days after the incident. Now, Billups says she won’t put her son back on the bus until she knows whether the other student will still be allowed to ride. News 6 will continue following the district’s investigation and the status of the sheriff’s office report.Copyright 2026 by WKMG ClickOrlando – All rights reserved.
