(WFXR) – Liberty University students had the chance to ask questions directly to Federal Bureau of Investigation Director, Kash Patel and law enforcement leaders, discussing everything from cybercrime to online child exploitation.U.S. Representative for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, John McGuire, hosted Patel for a roundtable with local, state and federal law enforcement leaders.”We’re here to build some bridges with our law enforcement and recognize them for an incredible successful Operation United Resolve,” said McGuire. Conversations led by students focused on how law enforcement can keep up with evolving technology and crimes committed online.“How do you think our rural departments in the 5th District are technologically going to keep up with these type of investigations on AI crimes?” said one Liberty University student. Local law enforcement commented that there isn’t necessarily a technology gap but a gap in man power. Patel said partnerships and public awareness are key.“The online space is something that has been super increasingly difficult to police, but we have to get out and educate the kids on how easily it is for the adversary and criminal to come in and infiltrate that network,” said Patel.
Bestselling author, former secretary of transportation join Perriello at Lynchburg campaign rally “As the congressman stated, you have to work as chairman of the legislature to keep up with the times, whether it’s at the state level or federally. The best example in this space that I can give you is how powerful the first lady’s push to get this “Take it Down Act”… because what it allowed us to do for the first time is go after the deepfakes is to prosecute this at the federal level,” said Patel. Patel spoke about the important role the next generation will have in bringing new ideas to help combat emerging threats.“One thing that was really highlighted at this event was the importance of cybersecurity, technical skills, and for people with those skill sets to get involved in public service in one shape or another. Whether that’s at the federal level, at the state level or in local law enforcement offices,” said Hope Tan, a senior at Liberty University. Before the roundtable WFXR was able to ask McGuire about issues he is working on as part of his campaign. One issue that is impacting the 5th District is affordability. The latest Consumer Price Index shows inflation rose to 3.7%.“What’s going on in Iran drove the prices up, so we’re trying to finish that up, but we got to finish it up the right way… so what I did about a week or two ago, I wrote a letter to president trump. I asked him to consider a state of emergency for permitting for refineries,” said McGuire. We reached out to Tom Perriello, Democratic Candidate for Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, running against McGuire who is up for re-election.Perriello said in part quote, “he cost Virginia families $1200 this year by extending a war of choice that has wreaked havoc over supply and handed control of the Straits of Hormuz over to the Ayatollah…I am focused on getting stuff done on day one and that starts with ending the Iran war and tariff chaos that McGuire has allowed to take $3700 out of the pockets of local families.”Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
