MERIDIAN TWP., Mich. (News 10) – Meridian Township officials are warning residents about an AI-generated tax scam targeting senior homeowners.
Officials said false information circulating on social media and YouTube claims the IRS has created a new “Form 1098-SR” that would allow senior homeowners to cap or lock in their property taxes.
There is no IRS Form 1098-SR, and the IRS has not issued a form with that name or purpose, township officials said.
The IRS does have a Form 1098, but it is not related to property taxes. Officials also said there is no federal law or IRS program that allows seniors to cap or lock in their property taxes.
Residents with questions about their property tax information should contact the Meridian Township Assessing Department at 517-853-4440.
