Meta confirmed that it is cooperating with authorities following the registration of cases by the Cybercrime police in Hyderabad against operators of various Facebook and Instagram accounts and Meta’s India head. The cases concern allegedly morphed and objectionable content targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP)-led NEET paper leak protests.
A Meta spokesperson said, “We are in touch with the concerned agencies and are cooperating with them to resolve the matter.”
The first information report (FIR) was filed following a complaint received at 7:40 pm on July 29 from T Saikiran Goud, 32, Social Media Coordination Committee Member of BJP Telangana, and resident of Dr SP Mookerjee Bhavan, opposite Exhibition Ground, Nampally, Hyderabad.
In the complaint, Goud stated that while browsing social media at 2 pm on July 29, he encountered reels and posts he alleged were derogatory towards the Prime Minister and appeared to promote narratives prejudicial to national integrity. He listed 20 URLs of Instagram and Facebook content and requested an investigation.
Goud alleged that the material might incite hatred, spread misinformation, promote enmity, and threaten national security. He asked the police to preserve electronic evidence, identify the account operators, conduct a thorough investigation, and coordinate with Meta Platforms to obtain account details. He also urged strict action against Meta for allegedly permitting such morphed content on its platform.
Following this complaint, ASI K Hari Ram registered a case at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Hyderabad, invoking Sections 66(C) and 67 of the IT Act and Sections 353(2) and 336(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
