Social media giant Meta on Tuesday said it will strengthen its efforts to combat child sexual abuse and from now on report child safety matters directly to the cybercrime portal managed by the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C).
“Protecting children on our platforms is a priority for us and we’re committed to working with the government to ensure that the perpetrators of these crimes are held responsible,” a Meta Spokesperson said.
The development comes after stern warnings by the Indian government to the company over the alleged circulation and promotion of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) through advertisements on Meta’s Instagram.
“To collectively strengthen our efforts to combat this harm, Meta will now report child safety matters directly to the cybercrime portal managed by I4C,” the Spokesperson added.
The government has also said that the online safety of children was a “fundamental principle” for any social media platform operating in India and remains “non-negotiable,” adding that the law of the land has to be followed by any company operating in the country.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) also said it was continuously in talks with all other platforms to identify and remove CSAM content and action will also be taken against any platform that doesn’t take proactive steps for the safety of children.
The latest step taken by Meta is significant because social media platforms can be used to circulate or facilitate access to CSAM and other forms of exploitation.
On September 9, representatives of Meta India were also summoned by the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) in connection with an investigation into alleged advertisements related to child sexual exploitation and abuse material (CSEAM).
