In the latest example of Boston University’s Metropolitan College (BU MET) staking a leadership position in the realm of cybersecurity education, the College has introduced a new graduate degree, the Master of Science in Cybercrime Investigation & Intelligence (MSCII), designed to help students develop the technical expertise, investigative skills, intelligence-driven mindset, and global perspective they need to confront today’s most complex cybercrime challenges and advance cyber justice worldwide.
A pioneering effort in an emerging academic discipline within the broader field of cybercrime investigation and cyber defense, this eight-course (32-unit) program is STEM-designated and available online or on campus. Developed through the support of government grants, its curriculum focuses on the applied technical, forensic, and intelligence skillsets needed to meet the ongoing demand of the global law enforcement workforce, combining courses from the Department of Applied Social Sciences with those from the Departments of Computer Science and Administrative Sciences for an education that integrates distinct strengths from each field.
“Through its unique combination of the distinct academic disciplines of criminal justice and computer science, this new program is a pioneering effort in an emerging academic discipline within the broader field of cybercrime investigation and cyber defense,” says Dr. Kyung-shick Choi, BU MET’s director of Cybercrime and Cybersecurity.
The MSCII differentiates itself from the MS in Criminal Justice with concentration in Cybercrime Investigation & Cybersecurity through its emphasis on the technical and analytical dimensions of modern investigations, including IoT forensics, cyber threat intelligence, financial crime, cryptocurrency and blockchain investigations, artificial intelligence, and deepfake-related offenses. It focuses on the techniques and principles used during investigative and legal procedures by law enforcement, intelligence professionals, and private-sector practitioners engaged in cybercrime investigation, digital forensics, and threat intelligence investigation and prosecution.
“Thanks to its integration of the disciplines of law enforcement, homeland security, technical cyber investigations, and intelligence, graduates of the cutting-edge MSCII program will have the technical and skills necessary to excel in leading successful cybercrime investigations and prosecutions,” says Senior Associate Dean Lou Chitkushev, who heads BU MET’s Digital Forensics Research Laboratory, which provides students with the chance to get involved with faculty-led, applied research projects that focus on cutting-edge areas like AI-based deepfake media detection, bio-cybersecurity, AI-based financial fraud prevention, and robot-based policing application and investigation procedures.
Cybersecurity students at BU MET additionally benefit from the school’s ongoing organization of the International White Hat Conference, which offers invaluable exposure to real industry practitioners and provides the chance to network with global partners to create ample career opportunity. BU MET’s cybersecurity programs are supported by grant funding from federal law enforcement agencies.
