Microsoft Digital Defense Report 2026: India ranks 7th globally in customer hacking impacts | #hacking | #cybersecurity | #infosec | #comptia | #pentest | #hacker

According to the recently released Microsoft Digital Defense Report (MDDR) 2026, India was seventh globally in the countries where customers were most impacted by hacking in the first half of 2026. Drawing telemetry from more than 165 trillion daily security signals, the assessment highlights a threat landscape where malicious activity is moving with a faster speed, spreading across complex digital networks and narrowing the window organisations have to respond.

Three dominant trends defining modern cyber threats

The report identifies three fundamental shifts shaping digital defense today. The first is interconnected attack surfaces. Threat campaigns no longer remain isolated as modern hacking routinely pivots across user identities, business applications, multi-cloud platforms, third-party suppliers and physical critical infrastructure. The second is that artificial intelligence (AI) is expanding the operational scale of cyber activity on both sides. Both malicious actors and security analysts are deploying AI to accelerate decision cycles, optimise workflow efficiency, and shorten execution windows.Thirdly, user credentials are still the most abused entry point. Compromised login accounts are still used as a launchpad for wide-spread corporate infiltration and systematic operational disruption.

Key data points: Phishing triples

Metrics released in the 2026 study demonstrate how fast a first breach can spread across an enterprise. In 2026, 23% of all recorded intrusions were the result of phishing campaigns, a sharp increase from the 7% recorded over the previous year. The report also notes that over 52% of compromised user account incidents resulted in secondary credential harvesting, showing just how fast one compromised user can put larger systems at risk. The time from public disclosure of a software vulnerability to its active exploitation in the wild often now falls well under 24 hours leaving defenders minimal time to deploy patches. As security incidents now cross organisational borders and supply chains in hours, Microsoft emphasised that building active organizational resilience is now just as critical as perimeter defense.
