JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Menkomdigi) Meutya Hafid revealed that 45 percent of children in Indonesia have experienced cyber bullying, according to research conducted by her ministry.
“According to our research, 45% of children have experienced cyber bullying,” Meutya stated during a discussion hosted by Kosgoro and the Indonesian House of Representatives’ Commission X at the DPR RI building in Jakarta on Monday (26/10/2026).
Meutya noted that this indicates the acceleration of various crimes against children, including bullying in digital spaces, due to digitalization.
“Digitalization essentially speeds up many processes, but this also accelerates negative incidents,” she continued.
Meutya also emphasized the need for parents to accompany their children online.
According to the data she presented, only 39.9 percent of parents feel sufficiently capable of guiding their children in the digital realm.
She cautioned that this figure is based on parents’ self-assessment and may not accurately reflect their actual abilities.
“From those who are confident that they can protect their children in the digital space, we need to check how many can truly guide their children effectively online,” Meutya said.
Only 10.2 percent of parents use duration-monitoring features
Meutya stated that digital platforms have provided features to help parents monitor both the duration of use and the content accessed by their children.
However, she noted that the use of these features is still low due to their optional nature. In fact, only 10.2 percent of parents use monitoring or parental control apps.
“But since these services are optional, only 10.2% of parents utilize them,” she remarked.
Meutya believes this condition highlights the need for broader education and habituation for parents to use digital monitoring features.
