SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) – The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office is urging residents to stay vigilant against a rapidly growing scam targeting local seniors and community members.

The scam, dubbed a ‘courier cash’ scam, involves scammers calling victims, pressuring them to withdraw large amounts of cash, lying to bank staff, and sending the money to an address the criminals provide.

To protect yourself and your loved ones from the scam, the Sheriff’s Office is encouraging the following:

  • Hang up immediately if anyone tells you to withdraw money
  • Be honest with your bank about transactions
  • Never ship cash

Police said these scams specifically target older people, so they urge residents to talk to their elderly loved ones about remaining vigilant.
